BASIA

Hi, I’m Basia Thomas — a pianist, educator, and artist with a love for music that crosses genres and borders. From classical to jazz, musicals to blues, and even world traditions, my journey has always been about exploring sound in its many colors.

I’ve collaborated with singers, instrumentalists, and ensembles of all shapes and sizes — from intimate duos and 8-hand piano ensembles to large vocal studios and opera workshops (Candide, Così fan tutte). Along the way, I’ve been fortunate to perform in projects like the Japanese Art Song Project and Schumann’s Liederkreis, as well as dive into music traditions such as African drumming, Steel Band, and chamber works.

I grew up in Memphis, TN, where my passion for music began at Overton High School for the Performing Arts. That path led me to earn my Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance at Delta State University and my Master of Music in Piano Performance at Montclair State University. My experiences have taken me abroad — including masterclasses in South Korea — and across the U.S., performing, teaching, and sharing music in both classical and contemporary spaces.

Along the way, I’ve been honored with awards like first place at the International Blues Conference in Cleveland, MS, top prize at Delta State’s Chamber Ensemble Competition, and recognition for outstanding performances in festivals, recitals, and musical productions.

Today, I call New Jersey home, where I balance performing, teaching, and creating — always searching for new ways to connect through music. When I’m not at the piano, I’m likely exploring new ideas, traveling, or relaxing with my sweet cat, Aria.
